A very important thing you should consider before you look very deeply into a new career opportunity is to try and understand what they do day to day. Of course those career day events you attend in high school can help you find out what a certain job does in a little bit of detail. Something else you can do is actually talk to someone who does the job you’re thinking about to find out firsthand what they really do.
With some jobs it’s really obvious what they do day to day, for example an English teacher. You know that this person is teaching English just by hearing the name of the title. But what exactly does a pharmacy technician do every day? What types of things are they responsible for?
Basically the main duty of a pharmacy tech is to assist the pharmacist with their daily work responsibilities. With the help of the pharmacy tech the pharmacist has a lot more free time to help the business grow and manage the pharmacy in general. So on any given day, you will probably find a pharmacy technician creating prescription labels, making phone calls to doctors offices to check on refill requests, and counting and measuring pills for the patients, filling their prescriptions.
Another important aspect of a pharmacy technician’s job is to make sure that the customers are taken care of, and to help answer their questions. They won’t actually help you answer medical questions, that’s a big no-no, within a retail environment a pharmacy technician can answer questions about the pharmacy, such as where you can find a certain over-the-counter medicine. They can also help you find other nonmedical products in the pharmacy as well. It’s possible that as a pharmacy technician you may find yourself working in some very different types of environments, but on the whole their responsibility is to help assist the pharmacist. Pharmacy technicians can find work in doctors offices, hospitals, retail stores, and medical centers. But no matter where you find yourself working, this job requires a high degree of attention and accuracy. When a customer comes in to fill a new prescription, they are counting on you to get exactly what they need because in a lot of cases, it’s the difference between a better life, or possibly even life or death.
